The Challenge: Best Well-Known Kept Secret in Oakland County

Oakland HOPE is serving families, providing food assistance, supporting volunteers, and building toward long-term community impact. The opportunity was making sure that impact was communicated as effectively online as it was being delivered in the community.

For a nonprofit, digital marketing has a different job than promoting a product or service. The website has to help people understand the mission, social media has to keep the community engaged, and email has to keep supporters connected. Search needs to help people find available resources, and communications need to show donors, volunteers, partners, and neighbors why the work matters.

Oakland HOPE had multiple audiences and multiple priorities competing for attention, so the goal was to bring all of those pieces together into one cohesive digital presence.

The MBM Approach: Assess Digital Presence From the Outside In

Instead of focusing on a single channel, the MBM Approach was to assess how the organization’s website, SEO, social media, email, and outreach efforts functioned together. If we focused on only one platform or one marketing tactic, Oakland HOPE would still be trying to fill in the gaps within their marketing foundation.

So the strategy was built around how we could fit all of these pieces together to strengthen the organization’s overall digital presence. Because why waste time trying to reinvent the wheel?

Website & SEO

The website audit evaluated the organization’s current digital experience and identified opportunities to strengthen its search presence. Completed work included:

  • Updating title tags and meta descriptions

  • Rewriting the About Us page

  • Reviewing website content and structure

  • Identifying opportunities to improve how information is presented to visitors

  • Addressing website URL issues

The goal wasn’t simply to make the website “SEO friendly.” It was to make sure both search engines and real people could clearly understand what Oakland HOPE does and who it serves.

Social Media

MBM completed a social media audit to evaluate the organization’s current presence and identify opportunities for stronger content planning and communication. The focus was on connecting content back to Oakland HOPE’s broader organizational priorities, rather than treating social media as a standalone activity.

Email Marketing

The newsletter was reviewed as part of the broader digital marketing audit. For an organization serving donors, volunteers, community members, and supporters, email is a direct way to keep those audiences connected to the work, and the audit identified opportunities to strengthen that communication.

PR & Community Outreach

MBM also developed recommendations and resources to help Oakland HOPE expand its visibility beyond its existing digital channels. This included:

  • PR and media outreach recommendations

  • Outreach templates

  • Contact tracking

  • Publication and media research

  • Community outreach opportunities

  • Intern-supported marketing tasks

Together, these resources were designed to create more opportunities for Oakland HOPE’s work to be discovered and shared by people outside its existing audience.
